Rear Patio

Adlefa

This Adelfa was purchased from the nursery garden for about 2 euros but the row behind I grew from seeds taken from some plants at Frontil Loja. It comes in several colours and is a hardy plant and it often found in the desert. Yes it is a bit prone to frost. The English know the plant as Oleander. I took this photo with the plant set against the Peñon Prieto which all my guests admire.

I initially purchased 2 Albizia Julibrissen (aka falsa acer de constantinoble) with exposed roots for 16 euros but they died on me. I then decided to purchase for the rear patio 2 larger specimens in pots for 40 euros each + delivery but every June the give me great pleasure when they come into flower. First became aware of them when I went to my sister´s funeral at Fuengirola. Thank you sister.

The lawn to the left entering the Cortijo needs a little more work on it. The sprinkler now has been set into the ground. Another bag of white stones will be required for below the olive tree. The crop of the olive trees have improved since they were grassed under. Could be due to the grass cuttings in part.

I had hoped to lay the 2 metre wide grass path leading up to the main lawn in April but as it was only a 20m2 order I had to wait until another order was place so Andy and I did not get around to laying until the end of May. It tooks us four and a half hours to collect and lay. The main lawn was "gramma fina" which survives drought and had been delivered by mistake. Some had been laid in the path area but I do not mind mixing the new (compact with the old). The gramma fina spreads so am letting this happen where the two types meet at the bendI need one more bag of white stones to finish this area (circle in the middle of the drive) off which unfortunatley seems to have been raided by ants and will need some attention over the winter

There will be a vast bed of Lavender to the left of the grass path and Juniperus to the right

Yellow Margaritas

The yellow margaritas on the left hand side of the drive were purchased for 1 euro each and have stood up to the extremes of weather - 10 to + 40 degrees centigrade. The white margarita will not survive the winter frosts. I have planted white in the shelter of the yellow, but really not very successful. There is a small white one to the right of main plant. The yellow flowers twice a year. The price of these seems to have risen so do not expect to pay this amount now.

Jasmine

Jasmine, is not "a" plant. It is often a term given to many plants with whitish and some yellowish, and some pinkish) blossoms, sweet fragrance, living in warm climes. The best one to grow in Villanueva del Rosario is:

Jasminum polyanthum "Winter Jasmine"
Sweeten your winter days with a blizzard of snow-white flowers. A vine by nature, "Winter Jasmine" also makes an excellent hanging basket with some encouragement. Known for its vigorous growth and ease of culture, all that’s needed is a sunny, cool window during fall and winter for optimum growth and bud set.

Hardy Zone 8 and higher for outdoors.

Full sun, grows to 1-3’ in container, vining in habit, minimum temperature indoors 35°, requires winter night temperatures below 60° to bloom, blooms in winter.

Fragrant! Good for a hanging basket! Here I have used it on a South West facing wall and sheltered to a certain extent from the winter frosts. The normal jasmin will not survive the climate here. It is an ideal plant for climbing the Spanish riejas.

-- Leaves opposite short petiole, lanceolate, shiny green by the beam and by the presence of white hairs on the lower side.
-- Flowers gathered in groups in knots at the end of the branches, chalice with 5 sepals, corolla with 5 petals formed a lip with 5 lobes white-blue, 4 curved stamens.
- Flowering all summer, sometimes in warm regions and if the copy has not been pruned are also flowering winter.
-- Use: stains, groups. Very suitable for borders, low hedges

-- Light: full sun.
-- Supports good high temperatures.
-- You can grown in cold climates, but needs protection. Hold weak frost (-5 ° C).
-- Soil fertile, something deep and sandy.
-- Very resistant to drought.
-- Resistant to the sea.
-- If pruning regularly presents a dense vegetation.
-- Without pruning typically given a second flowering winter.
-- The best time to prune is after flowering, cut the branches that have flower.
-- Multiplication: seed, cuttings at the end of the summer. I have successfully taken cuttings of this plant

Margarita

Under the name of Margarita there are endless plants grouped. Leucanthemum vulgare are classic daisies herbaceous, which have white flowers and yellow. Its size is between 25 and 70 cm and the diameter of about 15 cm. It replant spontaneously and prefer a sunny location and soil that has good drainage. In this pueblo you will lose the white Margarita to the frost but the yellow one appears to survice. After a couple of years you could plant the white variety in between the yellow ones and protected by these they will probably survive

Growing Dimorphotheca ecklonis

D. ecklonis must be planted in full sun in order for the flowers to open to their full potential although they will tolerate some shade during the day. They can be mass-planted as a groundcover, as a border to a shrubbery or to line pathways. They can be mixed with the equally attractive D. jucunda whose flowers are totally purple or pinkish mauve with a dark centre.

D ecklonis can be cultivated from cuttings taken in summer. Seed germinates easily and the plants often sow themselves. They are fast growing, frost hardy and drought resistant. Plants should be cut back after the second year to keep them tidy or be replaced by new plants. The peak flowering time is in spring but some flowers are always present on the plants throughout summer.

There are no known garden pests that attack these plants.

To date I have not tried propagation but will try this year. During the first year with the heat you can loose the plants but this photo shows one in it´s second year. More Information on this plant

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)

Rosemary tolerates some degree of drought, it is also used in landscaping, especially in areas having a Mediterranean climate such as this Spanish Pueblo. It is considered easy to grow for beginner gardeners, and is pest-resistant.

It can be propagated from an existing plant by clipping a shoot 10-15 cm long, stripping a few leaves from the bottom, and planting it directly into soil which is what I am doing. Here I am using the Irene variety — which is trailing and lends itself to ground cover.Rosemary is extremely high in iron, calcium, and Vitamin B6. The plant is extensively used in cooking, and when burned give off a distinct mustard smell, as well as a smell similar to that of burning which can be used to flavor foods while barbecueing.
